Marni couldn’t get to Mrs. Demko’s house fast enough. She parked at the curb and ran forward, but a firefighter stopped her from getting too close. Coughing in the smoke-filled air, she stared in horror at the burning house, the sight of Betsy’s precious rosebushes in flames bringing tears to her eyes. Marni scanned for Harper amid the fire trucks and rescue paraphernalia and firefighters in heavy gear moving around the yard.

Then she saw him coming out of the house. “Harper!”

She broke past the man who had stopped her a few minutes ago and made a frantic run to Harper. He tore his mask aside and opened his arms, pulling her close when she reached him.

Clutching him, his bulky yellow turnout jacket bunching under her arms, Marni shouted to be heard over the noise. “Tell me she is alive.”

“She is alive. They took her to the hospital. But smoke inhalation can be iffy even for a younger person.”

“I know.” She rested her forehead on his chest for a moment, then looked up and stepped back, embarrassed. She hadn’t meant to run into his arms, to cling to him like this. “How did it happen?”

“Looks like she fell asleep on the sofa leaving a greasy pan on a lit burner. A neighbor called it in. Too bad it wasn’t sooner.” He glanced back at the house. “We haven’t found anyone else in the house. Would you happen to know if—”

“Big Boy!” Her hands went to her mouth. “Ohmigod, that poor precious baby is probably still in there.”

“Who is—”

“Her cat. I don’t think there would be any other human in the house, but she had a big tabby cat. The commotion would probably make him hide. Please…if there is any chance of finding him…”

“I’ll go look for him. You go back behind that line over there, okay? It’s not safe here.”

“But…”

“For me, please?”

Marni reached up and tenderly brushed her fingers along his sweat-and-soot-stained cheek. “Be careful in there.” She knew any kind of unexpected thing could happen in a fire.

“Don’t worry. We’ve got it mostly under control now.”

He turned back to the house. Marni walked to the edge of the property and stood there, nervously shifting from foot to foot, waiting for Harper to bring out what she had to acknowledge would probably be the lifeless body of Big Boy.

Tears steamed down her cheeks. An antsy part of her wanted to race to the hospital to see Mrs. Demko, to make sure she was all right. What if she wasn’t? Would anyone be there to hold her hand if these were her last moments on earth?

Aside from the fact that they probably would not let a non-family member in to see her, Marni didn’t want to be sitting in a hospital lobby while Harper was still here working inside a collapsing, burning house. She didn’t want to leave while he might be in danger. She didn’t want to leave him at all. Ever.

But she let that thought drift away in the smoke. She could not let him know her true feelings.
